Sidney Health Center is pleased to announce the addition of a new non-invasive cancer screening for colon cancer. Starting in June, patients can choose to have a virtual colonoscopy through the radiology department at Sidney Health Center.
Virtual colonoscopy uses a computerized tomography (CT) scan to look at the colon which is appealing for many patients. Typically, people avoid colon screenings for various reasons. Anxiety, fear, embarrassment, misinformation and inconvenience are among the reasons for skipping this important screening.
As indicated, the virtual colonoscopy offers a nice alternative for many people. The exam takes 20-45 minutes to complete and requires no sedation, so patients can return to work or normal activities sooner. Plus, the virtual colonoscopy reduces the potential of complications during the procedure.
Traditional colonoscopy, which uses direct visualization of the colon, remains the gold standard for evaluating the entire colon especially for patients who are at risk for colon cancer. However, it is only as good as the people who are willing to have it done. The virtual colonoscopy is a nice choice for general screening, and offers good detection of problems in the colon, such as lesions or polyps.
Although the virtual testing is less expensive, many insurance companies are not willing to cover the expense. Instances that may qualify for coverage include patients with severe pulmonary disease, a bleeding disorder, prior allergic reaction to sedation, and advanced age. If insurance does not cover the cost of the procedure, pre-payment plans are available at Sidney Health Center.
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in women and men in America. The American Cancer Society says that 90% of colorectal cancer cases and deaths can be prevented with improved nutrition, increased physical activity, and early detection using timely screening. They recommend that all people over 50 should be screened.
If you would like more information about scheduling a virtual colonoscopy, please call the Sidney Health Center radiology department at (406) 488-2168 or ask your local medical provider.
