Comfort Care Packages Now Available for End-of-Life Patients at Sidney Health Center
April 24, 2025

At Sidney Health Center, we believe that compassionate care extends beyond medicine. For patients who enter our facility under Comfort Care—often during their final days—we are proud to introduce Comfort Care Packages, a heartfeltinitiative designed to bring warmth, dignity, and peace during this sacred time.

The idea for these Comfort Boxes was proposed by Malisa Reed, RN, one of our dedicated nurses who recognized a gap in end-of-life resources in Richland County. With no licensed hospice program available locally, many residents receive end-of-life care within the hospital setting. Moved by this need, Malisa began offering her own time to sit with patients who had no family present—ensuring they were not alone—and even used her own funds to provide small comforts like fuzzy socks, a warm blanket, or a soft beanie.

From her compassionate efforts, the Comfort Care Package was born. Each package includes:

  • A soft blanket
  • Three gentle washcloths
  • A small wooden cross
  • Soothing lotion
  • A microwavable weighted rice bag
  • Prayer card
  • Cozy, fuzzy gripper socks
  • Informational materials about the end-of-life process and what to expect

While each item may seem simple, the impact is profound. These packages serve as a tangible expression of care for patients and their families during one of life’s most vulnerable and meaningful transitions.

“This project grew out of love,” said Malisa. “It’s about making sure no one feels cold, alone, or unseen in their final moments. We want to provide comfort—not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually.”

The Comfort Care Packages reflect the shared commitment of Sidney Health Center staff to uphold dignity, comfort, and human connection in all aspects of care.

In lieu of a formal hospice program, Sidney Health Center offers an End-of-Life Comfort Care program through its Visiting Nurse Services. This program focuses on pain management, emotional support, and assistance with daily living to ensure that every patient’s remaining time is as comfortable and meaningful as possible. It also extends support to family members as they navigate the emotional and practical aspects of end-of-life care.
