Sidney Health Center Welcomes New Certified Lactation Counselors
February 18, 2025

Sidney Health Center proudly announces that Janessa Rhines, RN and Joan Turek, PA-C, have recently achieved their certifications as Certified Lactation Counselors (CLC). This qualification, accredited by the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice, represents a significant step in their careers and underscores their dedication to enhancing maternal and child health services within the community.

Janessa and Joan underwent an intensive examination in the summer of 2024 to earn this credential, which is pivotal in ensuring that they possess the necessary skills to provide comprehensive breastfeeding counseling and management support. Their roles are crucial in promoting breastfeeding as a cultural norm and ensuring that lactation support providers are culturally competent.

To maintain their CLC certification, which is valid for three years, they must undertake 18 hours of continuing education on breastfeeding, ensuring they remain current with the latest practices in lactation support.

Janessa’s certification was supported by a scholarship from the Montana Nutrition and Physical Activity Program, in partnership with the Montana Hospital Association, which covered the costs associated with her certification. This initiative is designed to boost breastfeeding support in rural Montana communities by empowering healthcare providers with specialized training.

Their certification not only marks personal achievements for Janessa and Joan but also significantly benefits Sidney Health Center and the broader community. Their expertise will enhance the breastfeeding support available to families, contributing to improved health outcomes for mothers and their children.

With this latest achievement, Sidney Health Center now boasts four Certified Lactation Counselors on staff in both clinic and hospital settings, including Janessa Rhines, RN, Joan Turek, PA-C, Katie Turnbull, RN, and Caycee Hermanson, RN.

Sidney Health Center extends its congratulations to Janessa and Joan for their commitment and dedication to advancing healthcare in our community.

The Nurture Nest Cafe: A Resource for Families

In addition to the expert lactation support offered by our newly certified counselors, Sidney Health Center invites all families to visit the Nurture Nest Cafe. Held on the second Tuesday of every month from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Sidney Health Center OB/GYN Clinic Waiting Room located at 214 14th Ave SW, this free program is open to families with babies from newborn to toddler.

At the Nurture Nest Cafe, families can meet with a Certified Lactation Counselor or mom/baby nurse, have their baby weighed and measured, and receive expert breastfeeding support, including advice on positioning, latching, milk supply management, pumping, and weaning. This is also a great opportunity for families to connect with other parents and discuss any concerns they might have about newborn care.

No appointment is necessary to attend, and the cafe is open to all families, regardless of their chosen feeding method. For more information, please contact the OB/GYN Clinic office at 406-488-2577.
