Dr. Peter Deveaux, a Board-Certified General and Colorectal Surgeon, joined Sidney Health Center in September 2021, bringing with him 25 years of extensive surgical experience. Dr. Deveaux’s path to a career in medicine began in his hometown of Dubuque, Iowa, where childhood asthma and visits to the emergency room sparked his early interest in healthcare. Inspired by the television show MASH* and a neighbor who was a physician, Dr. Deveaux knew from a young age that he wanted to pursue a career in surgery.
Dr. Deveaux served in the United States Army for 14 years and an additional two years in the Army Reserves. His military career took him on multiple deployments, including three tours in Afghanistan, two in Iraq, and one in Syria. These experiences not only honed his surgical skills but also fueled his passion for teaching, a calling he has carried with him throughout his career.
Dr. Deveaux is particularly passionate about colorectal cancer prevention and treatment. He completed a fellowship in colorectal surgery and performs approximately 500 colonoscopies per year. He finds great fulfillment in practicing at Sidney Health Center, where he feels he is truly making a difference in his patients' lives, particularly in the area of colon cancer screening.
In addition to his work at Sidney Health Center, Dr. Deveaux is actively involved in teaching Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) courses across Montana, including in Billings, Helena, and Great Falls. His dedication to education extends beyond U.S. borders; in April 2024, Dr. Deveaux volunteered to teach ATLS to physicians in Ukraine through a partnership between the American College of Surgeons and Harvard University’s Humanitarian Program. Despite challenging conditions, he spent approximately three weeks training local physicians to become certified instructors, ensuring the sustainability of life-saving trauma care in the region.
Dr. Deveaux holds a deep appreciation for history and literature, particularly historical novels and biographies. A biography by Dr. Tom Dooley, a Navy doctor during the Vietnam War, was instrumental in solidifying his desire to become a physician. When not in the operating room or classroom, Dr. Deveaux enjoys reading and spending time with his family, which includes his wife and three grown sons.
Dr. Deveaux’s story is one of service, dedication, and a lifelong commitment to the healing arts. His unique blend of military and medical experience, coupled with his passion for teaching and colorectal cancer prevention, makes him an invaluable asset to Sidney Health Center and the broader medical community.
